About

Forming Champions in Faith, Character, and Community

At St. Francis Xavier Parish in Medina, Ohio, our Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Athletics program is more than just sports—it’s a ministry dedicated to nurturing the whole child. Open to students from our day school, Parish School of Religion, and homeschool community, we offer a welcoming environment where every child can grow in faith, character, and athletic ability.

Our athletes participate in leagues sponsored by the Diocese of Cleveland CYO, where the focus is on the young person—not just the game. Through sports, we aim to instill the values of dignity, hope, service, and justice, encouraging each participant to become more Christ-like in their daily lives.

A Community Built on Service

Our program thrives thanks to the dedication of our Athletic Director, Kim Tuchek, and a committed team of volunteer coaches and board members—many of whom are parents. Together, we create a supportive environment where children can learn new skills, enjoy physical activity, and build lasting friendships.

We believe in the power of community involvement. Whether you’re interested in coaching, keeping score, or serving on our board, there are numerous opportunities to contribute to our mission. To get involved, please contact Chris Barringer at cbarringercyo@sfxmedina.org.

A Message for Parents

Welcome to St. Francis Xavier CYO Athletics! We’re so glad you’ve chosen to be part of a program that combines athletic growth with faith, friendship, and fun.

CYO Athletics is more than just sports—it’s an opportunity for your child to learn new skills, grow in confidence, and stay active while developing lifelong values. Every child is encouraged to compete at their own pace, and thanks to CYO’s mandatory participation rules, every athlete plays in every game.

A Mission That Puts Kids First

CYO Athletics is grounded in a core belief: the child—not the competition—is the focus. Every practice, game, and interaction is shaped by our goal of helping young people become more Christ-like in the way they live, lead, and treat others.

Through competition and teamwork, your child will learn what it means to grow in character, ability, and community—while honoring themselves, their family, their teammates, and their Church.

Living the ROOTS of Sportsmanship

We hold all participants—athletes, coaches, parents, and fans—to a standard of respect, built on our ROOTS framework:

Rules

Follow them

Opponents

Respect them

Officials

Honor them

Teammates

Support them

Self

Be accountable

If you see someone failing to uphold ROOTS, we ask that you step in or speak up. Together, we can reverse the negative trends in youth sports and be true beacons of light in our communities.

And when you see great sportsmanship in action, nominate a coach or team for the CYO Sportsmanship Award!

We’re in This Together

At CYO, we all share the responsibility of building a culture rooted in faith and respect. That’s what makes this program special—and different from so many others. We thank you for helping us carry out this mission.
