Concussion Awareness & Return-to-Play Policy

At St. Francis Xavier CYO Athletics, the health and safety of our athletes are paramount. We adhere to Ohio’s Return-to-Play law (ORC 3707.511) to ensure proper recognition and management of concussions in youth sports.

Recognizing a Concussion

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. Symptoms may include:

Headache or "pressure" in the head

Muffins in the Morning

Balance problems or dizziness

Double or blurry vision

Sensitivity to light or noise

Confusion or memory problems

Feeling sluggish, hazy, or groggy

If an athlete exhibits any of these symptoms during practice or competition, they must be removed from play immediately.

Removal from Play

In accordance with Ohio law:

Any athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion must be removed from practice or competition immediately.

The athlete cannot return to play on the same day.

The athlete may return to play only after being evaluated and receiving written clearance from a licensed healthcare provider.

The sport commissioner and pastoral designee/athletic director must be notified immediately of any such incident. In addition, the online CYO incident report form must be completed as soon as possible
