Coaching at St. Francis Xavier CYO

Thank you for your interest in coaching with St. Francis Xavier CYO Athletics! Our coaches are vital to our mission of developing young athletes in faith, character, and community. Before engaging with players, all prospective coaches must complete the following steps:
Coaching Requirements
1. Virtus Training

Certification
Register at virtus.org as a “First-Time Registrant,” selecting “Cleveland, OH (Diocese)” and listing “St. Francis Xavier, Medina” as your primary location.

Online Bulletins
After attending the training, complete periodic email bulletins to stay current.

In-Service Videos
Watch required videos at http://www.clevelandchildprotection.org/ under “In-Service Videos.”

Required Documents
Read and sign the “Policy for the Safety of Children in Matters of Sexual Abuse” and “Standards of Conduct for Ministry” (Revised June 2016). Submit signed forms to Lori at the parish office and email copies to sfxathleticforms@gmail.com.
2. Background Check

Complete a background check through Selection.com via your Virtus account. A $25 fee applies, which can be reimbursed by submitting your receipt to the parish office.
3. Coaches Development Program (CDP)

Register for and attend a CDP session through the Diocese of Cleveland CYO. After completion, you’ll receive a lanyard for your coaching credentials. Submit receipts for reimbursement to ktuchek@sfxmedina.org.
4. Concussion Training

Complete the Ohio Department of Health’s online concussion training every three years. Email your completion certificate to sfxathleticforms@gmail.com.

Once the training is complete, coaches must print and submit the completion certificate via email to SFXathleticforms@gmail.com.
5. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Training (Lindsay’s Law)

6. Coaches Contract

Sign and return the coaches contract to sfxathleticforms@gmail.com.
Age Requirements
Head Coaches
Grade School Teams: Must be 19 years or older.
High School Teams: Must be 25 years or older.
Assistant Coaches
Grade School Teams: Must be 16 years or older.
High School Teams: Must be 18 years or older.
All coaches must be approved by the Member Administrator and Athletic Director.
Role of the Coach
Coaches serve as youth ministry leaders, modeling Christ-like values and behaviors. Success is measured not just by wins but by personal and team growth, respect, and enjoyment of the game. Coaches are expected to:

Encourage positive sportsmanship.

Foster a safe and inclusive environment.

Collaborate with parents and parish leadership.

Uphold the mission and values of CYO Athletics.
